The chain

A code on screen has five chances to fail before it reaches a phone.

None of them are the code's fault. All of them are arithmetic you can do before transmission.

  1. Studio

    Levels are clipped to 16–235. Pure black and white leave the desk as dark grey and light grey.

  2. Encode

    Colour is carried at a quarter of the luma resolution, and compression rounds off hard edges. A QR code is nothing but hard edges.

  3. Broadcast

    An interlaced format sends every other line, then the rest a fiftieth of a second later.

  4. The set

    The deinterlacer guesses the lines it wasn't sent. On fine detail it guesses wrong, and the code shimmers.

  5. The sofa

    A phone camera, two and a half metres back, pointed at a lit screen at an angle.

None of this fails loudly. The viewer shrugs and puts the phone down, and whatever the code was pointing at never finds out it was nearly scanned. That is the expensive part: not the code, but the traffic that quietly never arrives.

Trusted address

A code is easier to trust when the address is readable.

Viewers look at the address bar after they scan. A shortener drops them somewhere anonymous and costs a redirect you don't have time for. A short address is also a smaller code — fewer modules, taller ones, and it stays readable further back.
